From the many objects in the Cuming Museum, the hourglass was chosen as an object of interest
A photostrip capturing a moment within the Elephant & Castle shopping centre.
The shopping centre is old and out-dated but nevertheless sees a large number of visitors, whether spending time within or in transit. The sands passing through the hourglass can be paralleled to the many different lives going about their businesses and experiencing the E&C shopping centre in their individual perspectives.
Picking out geometric shapes from the hourglass to become spatial dimensions
Geometric forms in the selected area of the E&C shopping centre
The resulting design allows freedom and fluidity of movement and the space is enhanced by light and shadow play.
This project involves a collaboration between the Cuming Museum and the Elephant & Castle shopping centre in SE1, London. Elephant & Castle is a burgeoning area with excellent transport links and being revitalised and developed, the shopping centre seeks to promote the Cuming Museum and also spark an element of interest within its spaces. The proposed installation offers a new, spatial way of experiencing both selected object from the museum and the shopping centre.
